LCM

Hello world. Before I go on vacations I'll tell you about my newest feat, my original LCM logo redesign. I love that logo, but it did need to be redesigned. The original logo idea is very good, in my opinion, but the way I drew it, wasn't. After all, I did it when I was twelve, exactly ten years ago.

I wanted it to be finer and lighter and to have more balance between the letters. I wanted them to have almost the same weight, and the M was squeezed in between the C and the L, and that was the major change in this new logo.  I slimmed the C a bit; I pushed the L aside a little, and detached the tip of the M from the border of the L and redrew that letter, making its thickess less variable. Other small changes include thicker C tips and slightly round corners.

I did this redesign because the logo was asking for it, you know. Maybe I will use it for personal things, maybe not. But my Leo Maino yellow and purple logo will continue being my business logo as it has more to do with the image I present to people than my LCM logo...

Life at the present moment...

Dear people of the world, I've been writing this blog for two years now and what started out as a pastime to end my boredom now consumes more than my life permits me to handle. In order to write really good posts, as I'd like, I would need time to research about each post's subject, and I decided that I am not going to write some crappy thing here just to write something. I write for pleasure, not obligation. And that is why I am writing more rarely, when time and desire let me do so. Time meaning college, work, school projects, personal projects and housekeeping, and desire meaning not wanting to lay down and forget about life when I find some rare spare time to myself.

But today I am showing you a new cover I recently designed for a book called O Alienista by Machado de Assis (translated to The Psychiatrist). The book plot deals with madness and the proposition for this cover was to design something completely conceptual. My design is as follows:

The main idea is unbalance, referring to a mad person as an unballanced person, so the composition was intentionally designed non simetrical and with no equilibrium.
The scribbles mean two things:
1 - the brain cells of a mad person, that are not in their right place;
2 - the mad person excluded from the society, as an alien in its own environment
The title was hand drawn, in the same traces as the scribbles and, the title has no spaces between the article and noun, this all giving a more chaotic and confused feeling to the cover.
The background has a blue-greyish green colour, to give the piece a gaunt-ish feel but allude to the name of the madhouse depicted in the book, which is called "The Green Mansion".

I hope you've enjoyed my new work and that you look forwrd for the next one I show you, even though it might tame a loooong time to publish it here. Now... go enjoy life while I
work a bit more to enjoy mine in the near future! ;)

2012

Welcome to the first post of the year! I know I have been quite absent and haven't posted cool things frequently, but even on holidays I had work to do. Only one week to rest and now life is back at full speed. I've got lots of new projects to go through this year, and the first is my new identity. It all started as a school project, but even after term has ended I am still working on it, redesigning my "brand". New logo? New typography? New colours? New approach? Believe it, it may seem easier to design your own identity, but it is not! You need to find the balance between all your personas and decide what is the exact image you want to show the world and be able to represent that graphically. But in the near future I will have everything done and explained here on this blog. Untill then... Happy New Year!

Feliz Ano Novo!

Not-So-Complex Posters

Continuing on the movie poster theme I chose some posters that I like that are made up with several elements in its composition. You could call them complex, but that's not how I would categorize them. If you analyze them close, they're not that complex; deep down, they're just made out of several elements but quite easy to "dissect" into different parts. ;)

3 posters in one

I love movie posters that are well designed, and here are 3 (or 9) posters that prove that well thought design does make a difference. Each of them is a single poster that stands alone for itself but combined with other two makes a whole new and more complex poster. Absolutely Brilliant!

Turner Duckworth

In September I listed a few design studios to check their portfolio when I had time, and time only came today (yes, I know how difficult that is to believe, but believe me: when you study in the mornings, work in the afternoons, and have to take care of your home and do homework in the nights you will find yourself with barely anytime left for you!). Anyway, on my list there was this studio called Turner Duckworth. Since it starts with T it was almost in the bottom, but it should have been right on the top. I started to look at their works and liked very much, especially after I found out they were the ones responsible for Amazon.com's logo. It is perfect how they made the arrow pointing from A to Z become a smile, and how that fits into the context of the company's business.

They were also responsible for Coca-Cola's brand redesign, making its core brand elements clearer and enhancing Coca-Cola's identity.

But what really blew me away was a "simple" Christmas card. Turner Duckworths has two offices, one in London and the other in San Francisco. And their 2009 Holiday card depicts both cities' skylines in a perfect negative and positive stylized drawing. I really did shout "Que genial!(how genius)" Luckily there were no one around to hear me and think I am crazy. Although I a am little crazy...

More about them and their works on their website here. Do go check it out and delight yourselves :)

Mel Maino

More old projects coming this way! I haven't had much time to update this blog as I used to but today is sunday and I have some 40 minutes left untill I go out, so there is some time now! Today I am showing you a logo I made for my sister, who's an architect. I wanted shapes that reminded buildings so I choose a type that suited that, and I made a symbol that evoked both my sister's names' first letter, the M, and contemporary buildings. I was aiming for a brownish colour or a forest green, but she wanted a bright, youth green instead, and I think it suited quite well. Then I settled a dark gray for the typography and tadah! We had the logo!

beijo do leo!

Continuing my ransacking through old college projects, today I decided to show you the logo I made for the Trianon Park, in São Paulo. The goal of the project was to create a new identity for the park and all its signage. Along with it was, of course, the logo. The concepts that we established for the project were Elegance, Tradition, and Romanticism. We made a detailed research of ornaments e typographic characteristics used in the Romantic period (the artistic age okay?, not the time when two beings fall in love). And I think the most used word during our work period was arabesque. "Because this has to have an arabesque. The arabesque this way. The arabesque that way. Arabesque this, arabesque that. Arabesque, arabesque, arabesque!" And for those who do not know what arabesque is... go find out! Anyway; the project was developed by a group of five people. But the final logo was made by myself and my my dear Yasmin Klein. The typography was designed by me exclusively for this project, based on the concepts and on the romantic characteristics discovered on the research. The arabesques were designed by Yasmin, also on the several researches about curlicues and ornamentation of that period.
Enjoy!

Here you will find Yasmin Klein's portfolio, and here her flickr.

Now, let's rest! :D Yes, rest because its all I can do, since I 've forgotten all my homework material at the office ¬¬

bobble

Those who know me know that I am a huuuge fan of the Egyptian designer Karim Rashid. I've talked about him more than once ere on the blog. And my favourite design piece made by him is the water bottle Bobble. And now, I finally got one!!!

Bobble is a water bottle made by recycled materials and has a lid that has a filter attached to it. I saw in an interview with Karim once that bobble was designed to help people that have no access to clean water. So you can just fill it with your tap water (although here in São Paulo tap water is potable) and drink clean, healthy water. How great is that?!

Now, besides all that, bobble is beautiful and very well designed. Its shape and colour are very appealing and because of its elliptical diameter depending on where you squeeze its body, more or less water is expelled from it. Aaand, the final touch is on the botom: one of Karim Rashid's symbols is branded there. Details that make a difference.

Its packaging is great also. It's simple and very chic. All in black with a few informational elements in different colours. And it is assembled with only one piece of card stock with special die cut. Very well designed just like the bobble bottle.

Bobble is cheap, is good-looking and eco-friendly. Need any more reasons to buy one? Cause I still got plenty ;)

Lippincott

GENTE! PÁRA TUDO!!! (brazilian expression of astonishment with a new discovery) One of the agencies that were on my list to show here on the blog is Lippincott. And I have just found out (just now) that it was Lippincott that redesigned the Starbucks logo!!! \O/ And taht is not all: it was Lippincott that established and set the standard for the Coca-Cola brand!! With red and the wave that alludes to the shape of the bottle. And there's even more: there are other important brands in their portfolio such as Chrysler, Delta Airlines, Dell and many others, including the brazilian Vale (that for me it will always be Vale do Rio Doce).

I knew that their works were good, but had no idea of how good they were. I had nothing thought of how I was going to write this post, but I confess that my ansiety and the fact that I discovered Starbucks on their website made me rush to my blog and spread the word to the world. So enjoy the works below and the others on their website: Lippincott - Brand Strategy and Design

I have already talked about Starbucks, brand logo, identity etc. a few other times. If you'd like to see those posts click here, here and here.

Excited kisses from leo

GENTE!

Wolff Olins

Another excellent Design Agency is Wolff Olins. If you do not know who they are, I bet you've at least seen one of their works. As they say, they are a brand business and work strategically with ambitious organizations worldwide. To better understand what Wolff Olins is about, watch this fun little about them: Wolff Olins Revised

Great aren't they? Amongst the most known pieces by them are the Aol and Tate redesigns, and the London 2012 Olympic Games visual identity. And I keep surprising myself to find out how many visual identities and communication of brazilian brands were designed overseas, and Wolff Olins is one of the studios that have done so. In this case with the mobile phone company Oi. But my favourite of all their work, and one of the logos I like the most ever since I started studying design is the Unilever logo. It is excellent in demonstrating exactly what Unilever is, a huge owner of quality brands worldwide. Don't you just wish you could have designed that?
